Waste management

Animal-proof bins are a requirement in a designated “baboon-affected area”, which covers the entire area of Betty’s Bay, no matter whether you have ever seen a babaoon in your neighbourhood or not. Current baboon management strategies are causing individual baboons to appear in previously undocumented places. Bins must have a device or some kind of locking system that a baboon is unable to open. Even your recycling bags should be in the bin as baboons use sight and not smell when looking for food. If you have more bags than fit in your bin, please take them to the drop-off station at the Betty’s Bay library or, even better, to the drop-off in Kleinmond as this station is larger and more secure.

Thanks to contributions by private residents in Betty’s Bay we have baboon-proof public bins in areas that are most affected by baboon visits. We hope to keep this Biosphere Living project going and add more bins where they are needed. Finally, a bylaw is in place that requires us all to comply with these regulations. Law Enforcement may issue a fine for non-compliance.

If anyone sees bags or non-compliant bins, please forward photos of this plus the erf number and street to the BBRA Conservation: Fauna Portfolio at 0606567341. The information will be added to the WhatsApp group and Law Enforcement will respond. Unsecured rubbish, innumerable instances of birdseed in gardens and/or deliberate feeding are the main reasons the baboons keep coming into the same areas.

We all need to make a personal contribution to baboon management by securing our waste, not feeding birds or baboons and baboon-proofing our properties.

Waste management solutions include not doing this:

If we do not accept responsibility for our waste, we really cannot complain about the baboons.

Household Rubbish Bins

Household Rubbish Bins

Chacma bin & lock

Recycled plastic bin & galvanised lock. Free-standing & absolutely baboon-proof if the carabiner is in place.

Metal locks are made for different

types of round bins.

Bin with self-locking device

These are similar to the new municipal bins.If you have a holiday house & need a bin to stay permanently in place, there is a stand to go with this bin.

Rooi Els model P bin

Variable, recycled plastic bin.

Latch does rust, so purchase an extra one, plus a carabiner. Permananent fixture. Good for holiday homes.

Custom-made wire mesh cage

Permananent fixture. Good for holiday homes. Best practice is to have small mesh holes or put planks on the bottom/sides to prevent fingers fitting through the holes.

If you would like to purchase any of these locks or cages, please call

Re-usable mesh basket

Lid must be attached and have a locking device such as a carabiner or good rope – remember baboons

are much stronger than us. Maintenance is required.

A wheelie bin without a strong locking device must be kept upright by being attached to a pole or by hooks to a wall or fence. The baboon’s weight on the lid will keep it closed. If the bin can be tipped on its side, they can get their hands inside it at the corners.
