Our village was named after a little girl named Betty who loved coming here. We who live here now share her love of Betty’s Bay. Imagine what we could do together to make Betty’s Bay the place where we all want her love to be in our hearts?
In December a small dedicated group of about a dozen volunteers united together as the Ward 10 Sub-Committee to tackle the issue of the abysmal level of Service Delivery and by early March their efforts were rewarded with the Speaker, Grant Cohen, acknowledging that there is a problem and defining steps to remediate it. (https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=363064592493409&id=100063696130990&sfnsn=scwspwa) Yes, the problem has not yet been resolved but those volunteers have already made a difference in a relatively short period of time.
So just imagine the difference that could be made if there were more volunteers? There are less than 20 volunteers on the BBRA and we need your help. Everyone who resides here or pays rates is now automatically a passive member of the Ratepayers’ Association. Active members are defined as those who join by paying the modest fee of R100 a year which is less than R2 a week. But there are more ways to contribute that do not involve money: volunteering your time and expertise.
We all lead busy lives but imagine what could be accomplished if 1000 people volunteered just one hour of their time each month? What if another 100 people volunteered one hour a week? What if 10 people volunteered one hour a day? That comes to almost 20,000 hours of volunteer time per year which is the equivalent of 10 full time employees working for Betty’s Bay every day.
Volunteers can and do make a difference! Imagine that it is 2025, and during the holiday season our beach waste bins are emptied every day so that our beaches remain clean. Imagine that there are security cameras keeping crime to a minimum so we all live in a safe community that is family friendly. Imagine the collective pride in knowing that we made this happen, because we all decided to pitch in–even if only for an hour a month.
Love is about giving, and for those of us who love Betty’s Bay, giving a little of our time towards the betterment of our community is the true spirit of what it means to live here in our little corner of paradise.
Kind regards
Richard
