The Dunes and Amenities portfolio is an exciting and developing portfolio for the BBRA’s TEAM that will benefit ratepayers and residents! More residents and visitors enjoy the beaches and the dunes than any other part of Betty’s Bay. Visitor numbers vouch for that.
Calling all to volunteer … watch or work
We are hoping for hordes of volunteers to come forward and join us in our latest endeavour! We can start by observing and monitoring the beaches and dunes, either individually or as a group. Any action or observation is valuable, whether picking up litter or noting and reporting the presence of fauna and flora. In the end, however, the collective actions will make the biggest difference.
Beach clean-up action plan
We have an action plan. I am sure many of you have heard about the Pringle Bay clean-up activities under the wing of Robert Kyzer. We have a coastline of more than 13 km, so that means we need many eyes and volunteer actions. Robert started the Pringle Bay action with some understanding of where their beach litter comes from, and what litter is made up of, followed by restoring parts of dunes with rooikrans branches. We will do the same. Participants are free to choose how they would like to get involved.
Informal pathways to the beach are challenges
It just so happens that dunes and beaches are the most threatened part of our attractive coastline. Informal pathways across and through dunes present many challenges. Certain areas could certainly be identified for boardwalks.
We love the beach but litter not
Anyone who has seen the piles of mixed rubbish in the large tips at Kleinmond transfer station will be aware that the rubbish issue is very complicated. We seem to throw much away, which ends up in landfill, without understanding the impact. Littering is innocuous sometimes. It is blown under bushes and into the sea. Large drainpipes wash litter down into the sea. But let’s kick off our action plan and start picking it up!
