At a meeting of the relevant stakeholders, Theo Steenberg stated that it would be more cost-effective to dustproof roads rather than to add a layer of gravel. Theo indicated that he would submit a report to this effect to Theresa Els, Ward 10 Councillor.
Initially it was thought that the additional R1 million should be spent on gravel rather than dustproofing roads. However, after Theo’s recommendation instead to use it for dustproofing, I want to satisfy myself that it is actually more cost-effective to dustproof roads rather than to add gravel. It seems that apparently added gravel is washed away time and again and that it would be cheaper in the long run to dustproof roads by adding a thin layer of tar every year (dustproofing). This is in spite of these roads possibly requiring some repairs after the rains.
