We are delighted to have Michel and Saskia Brink on board as new members of the BBRA committee. They are new residents of the area, young, passionate and dynamic.
They write:
When we planned our move to beautiful Betty’s Bay, our aim was to build with a light footprint and to become custodians of the sensitive dune areas that connect our beaches to the lovely green belts on our coastline. In a few short months, we have seen how foot traffic in sensitive areas impacts dune vegetation.
Our goal is to stabilize and protect these essential ecosystems by packing dry brush on top of the vulnerable areas. As a long-term goal, we would like to assist with the construction of walkways as entry points to and from the beach. They not only help protect the dunes from human impact but also allow for safe and easy access to the beach for everyone. However, achieving this goal requires the help of the community.
We would like to ask the community to try to avoid walking on the dunes and to get involved in dune stabilization projects, to be mindful of the human impact on dune ecosystems, and to support the construction of walkways. In addition, we require help in getting dry brush to designated entryways and help in packing it on the exposed areas. The co-ordinating of the collection and transportation of brush, as well as the organizing of the packing teams, will be key to the success of this project. If anyone can help, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
Together we can preserve and protect these unique habitats for future generations to enjoy.
