FEBRUARY 2024 FIRE IN WARD 10: LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Dear Residents of Betty’s Bay,

In the face of adversity, our community stood strong, united and unwavering. The recent wildfire that swept through the space between us and Pringle Bay tested our mettle, but it also revealed the incredible spirit that resides within each of us. As the Chairman of the Betty’s Bay Ratepayers Association, I am humbled and immensely proud to express my deepest gratitude to all those who rallied together during this challenging time.

Our community emerged as a beacon of hope. Neighbours, friends, and strangers alike stepped forward with open hearts and willing hands. From the early hours of the fire, you were there, offering comfort, shelter, and sustenance. Your acts of kindness transformed mere words into tangible support. Whether you prepared meals, shared resources or simply lent a listening ear, your presence made a difference. Betty’s Bay, you are the heartbeat of resilience.

To the tireless volunteers who manned Crassula Hall around the clock, thank you. You transformed a humble community centre into a hub of nourishment and care. Your dedication fuelled our firefighters, providing them with sustenance and encouragement. You cooked, you served, and you ensured that no one faced the flames on an empty stomach. Your selflessness embodies the true spirit of community.

Rooiels, Pringle Bay and Kleinmond—our neighbouring towns, stood shoulder to shoulder with us. Your contributions flowed freely, transcending village boundaries. Together, we formed an unbreakable chain of support. When the winds howled and the smoke thickened, we knew we were not alone. Your generosity touched our hearts and reminded us that unity knows no borders.

To the organisations and companies that stepped up, we extend our heartfelt appreciation. Your donations of food, medical supplies, water and ice were lifelines. You exemplify corporate responsibility at its finest. Your actions echoed far beyond spreadsheets and balance sheets; they resonated in the hearts of those you aided. Thank you for being our partners in compassion.

Lastly, I want to acknowledge the Fire Chief’s trust in our association. When duty called, we answered. Coordinating these relief efforts was both an honour and a responsibility. Our collective efforts were guided by a shared purpose, to protect our community and those who serve it. Firefighters, you are our heroes and we salute your courage.

In closing, let us remember that the flames may have scarred our landscape, but they also ignited a flame of unity within us. Betty’s Bay, you are more than a place on the map; you are a resilient family. Let us continue to support one another, rebuild what was lost and nurture the bonds that make us stronger.

With heartfelt gratitude,

                                                                        7 February 2024
