Snake bites:
As the summer season is upon us, snakes emerge from hibernation. Pet owners need to be aware of the action to be taken in the event of a snakebite.
- STAY CALM and reassure your pet.
- If your pet shows signs of respiratory distress he has been injected with a neurotoxic venom.
- Flush the area of the bite with water to clear any excess venom from the skin.
- Cut the hair around the bite to check if two fang marks show.
- DO NOT USE A TOURNIQUET!
- If possible, try to identify the snake. Take a photo.
- Call ahead to the nearest veterinary clinic to explain the situation, detailing the type of snake and your pet’s condition. They will inform you if they have anti-venom or give you the contact details of a clinic that does have it in stock.
We recommend that you download the free ASI SNAKE app by Johan Marais. This will help you to identify the snake.
Any donations to KAWS, for veterinary bills/food or general care of the animals, would be greatly appreciated. Donors will receive Section 18A Tax Certificates.
