Restore habitat, Preserve biodiversity, Embrace Biosphere Living
The Blue Wave is a new initiative that is part of an awareness campaign of the Betty’s Bay Conservancy (BBC) to acknowledge and reward residents who embrace these Biosphere Living principle in visible ways on their properties and also to create a community that is aware of this and “catches the wave”.
Our first Biosphere Living award goes to: Pierre and Genevieve Tickner for “Fauna-Friendly Fencing”. Congratulations! We also welcome Pierre and Genevieve as new members to the BBC.
Pierre and Genevieve have recently installed a perimeter fence on their property. Their wooden fence allows small animals like tortoises and mongoose to enter and leave the plot using the gap left at ground level. But their major contribution is the animal corridor that they have established between themselves and their abutting neighbour. They have fenced 700mm inside their perimeter boundary along a length of 49 meters to allow animals to still move through this space. In square metres that space equates to 34m². Using the properties evaluation roll published in 2024, the value of this donation to nature is worth R47 000.00.
The BBC thanks you for your thoughtfulness and invaluable contribution to “Restore habitat, Preserve biodiversity, Embrace Biosphere Living”.
If you see examples of “Biosphere Living” that you feel are worthy of an award, please send your nomination to Ann Bradshaw at bradshawann37@gmail.com or contact her on 082 923 5565. She is sponsoring this initiative and coordinating if for the BBC
