As the Kogelberg Biosphere Wildlife Rescue & Training Center is preparing to open very soon, we need to start a regular volunteer weekend and afternoon shift alongside our current morning shifts. If you have time to spare later in the day, or if weekends suit you better, please let me know when you would like to come help to help us at the Centre. We urgently need to recruit a lot more helping hands. If you have social groups or neighbourhood groups, please share our urgent need for volunteers with them… and maybe start car-pooling with friends. The Center will soon be fully functioning and I estimate that to get through all the chores each day, we will need a group of around 70 regular volunteers (5 per shift). Thank you also to those of you who have supported us in other ways. We can always use items off our wish list to keep us going.
Short version of wish list :
Garden snails/insects
Indigenous plants
Wooden planks/poles/huts
Cleaning products
Toilet paper/towels
Coffee/milk for volunteers
Tea towels/ mops/etc
Vet products/F10 steriliser
The list is long but any donation, no matter how small, can help us carry out our work.
This little nu-nu is a Vlei rat pup (Otomys irroratus). Found in low altitude grassland and swamps, these obligate herbivores are born precocial, meaning newborns are fully furred and feeding independently within a few days of birth. In the Western Cape, specifically, 31% of their wetlands habitat (plus a 32m buffer), have been transformed to agricultural use (Sanbi.org)
