The Battle for Betty’s Bay: Report on Hack no 732 – February 2025

Thirty five volunteers attended this hack including three new hackers, Peter Weeks, Leon du Toit and Patrick Boltller. We trust that you enjoyed your first outing and sincerely hope that this will be the first of many. A welcome return to Mike Begley after a long absence.

This hack targeted two extensive thickets of large Australian myrtle (blue areas) on the western edge of the Dawidskraal River and was a continuation of the Hangklip Hardcore Hack of 22 January 2025.  The sites were accessed along the western and south eastern fire breaks.  Chainsaw operators reduced the myrtle into manageable branches and logs which were passed long distances by a chain gang of draggers to a single pile (yellow) stacked in the western fire break where it is accessible for removal with a vehicle by staff from the Harold Porter Botanical Garden.

A big thank you to Anne Mourant for the delicious sandwiches – an extra loaf of bread was needed to feed the masses.  The mid-morning break and the aftermath was held in the shade of the huge flowering gums in front of the Disakloof camping ground.

A special word of thanks for the ongoing support of the hackers from Rooi Els, Pringle Bay and Kleinmond.

As ever, on behalf of the Betty’s Bay Fynbos, thank you all for your efforts.
