On the 4th and 5th March 2025, the Overberg Region welcomed an extraordinary visitor. A Macaroni Penguin!

This endearing bird unexpectedly arrived on the shores of Hawston Beach. This extremely rare and unusual sighting sent birding enthusiasts across South Africa into a frenzy.

Many excited “twitchers” rushed to catch a glimpse of this remarkable bird miles away from home. Home is usually Marion and Prince Edward Islands in the Southern Ocean.  They managed to connect with this rare visitor before it returned to the ocean late Wednesday afternoon.

Having completed its moult, the penguin was ready to head back home. We wish him safe travels on his long voyage back to his natural breeding ground.

This sighting of the Macaroni Penguin on Hawston Beach was not only a rare and exciting event but also a testament to the respect and care shown by the birding community. Birders and onlookers maintained a safe and respectful distance, ensuring that the penguin was not disturbed or threatened in any way. This considerate approach of the birders allowed the penguin to rest and complete its moult undisturbed, while they observed and appreciated it.
