Twenty five volunteers attended. This was the third hack of the year at the Dawidskraal River.  As there were fewer hackers than last month, the area closest to the bridge on the western side of the river was targeted (blue).

There were seven chainsaw operators with draggers feeding a long line of

hackers who passed the cut off branches to the stackers in the western fire break. The stackers created a single large pile (yellow) where it is accessible for removal with a vehicle by staff from the Harold Porter Botanical Garden.

A big thank you to Mary Whitelaw and Lee Boyd for the delicious sandwiches which were quickly devoured by the hungry hackers.  Thanks to Dave Mourant for providing all that was needed for the mid – morning tea and coffee break as well as for mixing the herbicide for painting the hacked aliens blue.

It was hugely rewarding at the end of the hack to see the bridge and the Harold Porter buildings from the hack site now that a large portion of the myrtle thicket has been cleared. Weather permitting, we will be back in April 2025 to continue the battle of the myrtle whilst the river banks remain dry.

A special word of thanks for the ongoing support of the hackers from Pringle Bay and Kleinmond.

As ever, on behalf of the Betty’s Bay Fynbos, thank you all for your efforts.

Rob Boyd, Convener Betty’s Bay Hack Group.
