A group of BBC Penguin-Pals volunteers is assisting CapeNature with night and early-morning patrols in specific areas around the colony. One of the aims of the patrols is to spread human scent in the area where caracals are known to predate to deter them from entering that area. Patrollers work in pairs for safety purposes, and under the direction of CapeNature staff. Patrollers take care not to disturb the penguins.
Camera traps are positioned in the area, along with a caracal trap. The staff review the camera footage for caracal activity and adjust the patrols as required.
