The success we enjoy is a direct result of the strong backing we receive from our dedicated community. Thank you for being an essential part of our journey.
Balance
As ratepayers and residents, adopting a balanced approach to the challenges within our village is crucial for several reasons:
Sustainable Solutions: A balanced approach ensures that solutions are sustainable and consider the long-term impact on the community. This prevents quick fixes that might lead to bigger problems in the future.
Inclusivity: It allows for the inclusion of diverse perspectives and needs within the community. By considering various viewpoints, we can create solutions that benefit everyone, not just a select few.
Resource Management: Balancing different priorities helps in the efficient allocation of resources. This ensures that funds and efforts are directed towards the most pressing issues without neglecting other important areas.
Community Cohesion: A balanced approach fosters a sense of unity and co-operation among residents.
When everyone feels heard and valued, it strengthens community bonds and encourages collective action.
Resilience: It builds resilience by preparing the community to handle multiple challenges simultaneously. This adaptability is essential in facing unforeseen circumstances and ensuring the village thrives despite difficulties.
By maintaining a balanced perspective, we can address our village’s challenges more effectively and create a harmonious, thriving community.

BETTY’S BAY NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Thank you to those who have specifically supported our important Safety and Security portfolio. We are well-positioned to assist various agencies with information and surveillance to enhance our safety initiatives.
We have received a donation of ten new SD cards to replace faulty ones in our cameras. One camera is not operating optimally and will need to be replaced in the near future.
This month, we were asked to revise how we present our crime statistics, and we have successfully implemented these changes. It is crucial that our information remains confidential and is utilized to empower our efforts.
We are currently conducting a raffle to raise funds for the Watch. Tickets are priced at R50 each and can be purchased by depositing the amount into our bank account and notifying me of the transaction. We have not engaged in fund-raising recently due to other pressing matters, such as launching BEST and the Camera Project.
When purchasing a ticket via bank transfer, please use your erf number followed by the word “knife” as your reference. For other financial obligations, such as data for the radios, kindly use your erf number followed by “radios” as your reference. You may also use your erf number in combination with “cameras” or “general” for any other transactions.
The next step for the Camera Project is to acquire two large smart TVs to be installed at the Sandown Bay Office in Betty’s Bay. This will enable us to monitor our two camera platforms more effectively. Additionally, we require four laptops to install the necessary software for the cameras so that images can be displayed on the larger smart TVs. Two laptops will be located at the Betty’s Bay office and two will be at the Kleinmond control room.

Responsible Dog Owners
I would like to give a big thank you to all the dog owners who consistently use leashes and responsibly clean up after their pets. Your actions are not just about following rules; they reflect the responsible and considerate community we aspire to be.
By keeping your dogs on leashes, you ensure the safety and comfort of everyone in our community, including other pets and wildlife. Your diligence in cleaning up after your pets keeps our shared spaces clean and enjoyable for all.
Please continue your efforts, as your positive actions set a wonderful example and inspire others in our community to follow suit. Together, we can maintain a harmonious and pleasant environment for everyone.
Thank you for your commitment and cooperation!
Addressing Leash Regulation Violations
While we deeply appreciate the efforts of responsible dog owners, we must also address instances where leash regulations are not being followed. If you observe any dogs off-leash, I invite you to share relevant photographs, videos, or the identification of residents or visitors involved.
Your contributions are invaluable in helping us maintain a safe and pleasant environment for everyone. I will personally reach out to law enforcement to seek assistance in addressing these issues. This approach also applies to any other transgressions you may observe within our community.
By working together and staying vigilant, we can ensure that our community remains a welcoming and respectful place for all.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to our shared values.
Addressing the Challenges of Baboons
Baboons present a notable challenge within our community, a situation that is often intensified by human actions such as the improper disposal of food waste or the feeding of baboons, whether intentionally or unintentionally. To effectively address this issue, we should take the following measures:
Ensure that all waste is securely stored in baboon-proof bins to minimize their attraction to residential areas.
Educate residents and visitors on the importance of not feeding wildlife, as any form of feeding, whether intended or not, can encourage baboons to return.
Support and implement strategies recommended by wildlife experts.
By adopting these approaches, we can mitigate human-baboon conflicts and foster a harmonious co-existence between our community and local wildlife.
Domestic cats pose a threat to local wildlife, particularly birds and small mammals. This issue is also influenced by human behaviour, such as allowing cats to roam freely. To mitigate this, we should:
Encourage cat owners to keep them Indoors: We recommend that cat owners keep their cats indoors, particularly during dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active.
Promote the use of cat enclosures: We advocate the use of outdoor cat enclosures (commonly known as catios) that allow cats to safely enjoy the outdoors while minimizing risks to local wildlife.
Support proposed solutions: We encourage involvement in initiatives designed to protect local wildlife, including wildlife-friendly gardening practices.
By adopting these strategies, we can safeguard our local wildlife and ensure that domestic cats do not adversely affect native species.
It is vital that we approach these issues in a manner that unites our community. Let us collaborate on implementing the proposed solutions, fostering a spirit of co-operation and understanding. By addressing these challenges together, we can cultivate an environment where both humans and wildlife can thrive.
Prospective new home-owners: I would like to kindly request the co-operation of all ratepayers, residents, and estate agents in providing prospective home-owners with a thorough understanding of life in Betty’s Bay.
It is important that we engage in open and transparent discussions to ensure that newcomers are aware of our community’s values and the significance of maintaining the character of our village, as well as protecting our beloved wildlife. Betty’s Bay is a distinctive and beautiful location, renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and rich biodiversity. Our community is home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered African penguin, and it is imperative that we safeguard these natural assets. By equipping new home-owners with the knowledge of our community values and the importance of environmental preservation, we can uphold the charm and ecological balance that make Betty’s Bay so extraordinary. Let us continue to collaborate in fostering a community that respects and values our natural surroundings. Your commitment and co-operation are greatly appreciated.
Guests: For both legal and illegal holiday rentals, it is imperative to ensure that all necessary emergency information is prominently displayed on the refrigerator. This includes contact numbers for local emergency services, the nearest hospital, and any relevant community safety contacts. By doing so, we can significantly enhance the safety and well-being of our guests, ensuring they have immediate access to crucial information in case of an emergency.
I urge everyone to exercise self-discipline while using our roads. Drive at a safe speed. It is concerning to hear remarks suggesting that if others speed, it is acceptable to do so as well. Such attitudes detract from the balanced community we aim to cultivate.
Being neighbourly: Have you taken the time to connect with your neighbours? Engaging in conversations about ways to improve your area can foster a strong sense of community. Building relationships with your neighbours is more than just a friendly gesture. It is the foundation of a supportive and cohesive community.
By taking the time to introduce yourself and engage in meaningful conversations, you can share ideas and collaborate on initiatives that enhance the quality of life in our area. Whether it’s discussing neighbourhood safety, organizing community events, or simply offering a helping hand, these interactions can lead to a stronger, more connected community.
Moreover, when neighbours know and trust each other, it creates a safer environment for everyone. Open communication can help address common concerns, resolve conflicts amicably, and ensure that everyone feels valued and heard. Let’s take the initiative to reach out, listen, and work together to make our community a better place for all.
ERF 4030: I am pleased to share that our application to lease erf 4030 for a community garden has been published. This is an exciting development for our community, as it marks a significant step towards creating a shared space where residents can come together to chill amongst the fynbos. A specialised community garden not only provides a source of tranquillity, but also serves as a hub for social interaction, education, and environmental stewardship. Unfortunately this will be a dog-free zone for now.
We encourage everyone to get involved, whether you have green fingers or are just starting out. Together, we can transform erf 4030 into a vibrant, productive space that reflects the spirit and values of our community.
Fire-wise: I would also like to acknowledge and extend my gratitude to the residents who have taken the initiative to manage their verges and collaborate on reducing fire hazards adjacent to their homes. Your proactive efforts in maintaining and beautifying your verges not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of our community but also play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. By keeping these areas well-maintained, you help to minimize the risk of fires, which is especially important in our region.
Furthermore, your willingness to work together and share best practices for fire hazard reduction demonstrates a commendable spirit of co-operation and community-mindedness. These actions contribute significantly to creating a safer, more resilient environment for everyone.
Clean-ups: It would be fantastic to see an increase in community street clean-up events as we move into warmer weather. As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, it’s the perfect time for us to come together and take pride in our beautiful surroundings. Organizing and participating in street clean-up events not only helps to keep our neighbourhood clean and inviting but also fosters a sense of unity and shared responsibility among residents. These events provide an excellent opportunity for neighbours to connect, work side by side, and strengthen community bonds. By dedicating a few hours to picking up litter, trimming overgrown vegetation, and ensuring our streets are well-maintained, we can make a significant positive impact on our environment.
Moreover, clean streets contribute to the overall health and safety of our community, reducing hazards and creating a more pleasant living space for everyone. Let’s embrace the warmer weather as a chance to enhance our neighbourhood and show our collective commitment to maintaining the charm and cleanliness of Betty’s Bay.
Bird feeding: I encourage residents to minimize bird feeding in your gardens, as it inadvertently attracts baboons. Allowing wildlife to thrive naturally, without human intervention, is in everyone’s best interest.
Feeding birds, while well-intentioned, can have unintended consequences for our local ecosystem. When we provide food for birds, it often attracts other wildlife, such as baboons, which can lead to increased human-wildlife conflicts. Baboons, in particular, are highly intelligent and opportunistic animals that quickly learn to associate humans with easy food sources. This can result in them becoming more bold and intrusive, posing risks to both the animals and residents.
By reducing bird feeding, we help to maintain the natural balance of our environment. Birds and other wildlife have evolved to find food sources on their own, and it is important that we allow them to continue these natural behaviours. This not only supports the health and well-being of the animals but also helps to preserve the integrity of our local ecosystem.
Let’s work together to ensure that our wildlife can thrive naturally, without human intervention. By doing so, we contribute to a healthier, more harmonious environment for all species, including ourselves.
First Thursdays: Please consider participating in the First Thursday events when they come to Betty’s Bay.
These events provide a unique and valuable opportunity for residents to engage directly with the Mayor, the Municipal Manager, and all the directors. Whether you have questions, need clarification on municipal matters, or wish to discuss specific problems, this is your chance to have your voice heard and your concerns addressed.
First Thursday events are designed to foster open communication and transparency between the community and local government. By attending, you can gain insights into the workings of the municipality, learn about upcoming projects and initiatives, and provide feedback that can help shape the future of our community. No appointments are necessary, and residents are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, making it accessible for everyone.
Your participation is important in ensuring that the needs and interests of Betty’s Bay residents are represented and considered. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to build a stronger, more informed, and cohesive community.
Shared responsibility: It can be difficult to accept constructive feedback from individuals who often convey negativity. I would appreciate it if concerns could be paired with potential solutions when they are presented.
It is important for each of us to take responsibility for our issues and engage in collaborative problem-solving, rather than depending on others to resolve matters that we can address ourselves. Let us all commit to our shared responsibilities within the community.
Warm regards
Wayne Jackson
