What is KAWS….And Why?
KAWS was founded in 2001 by a feisty 70-year-old lady who could no longer ignore the sick, mange-ridden, and undernourished dogs she saw wandering around the poorer areas of Kleinmond.
She had started on her own from the back of her bakkie: feeding and treating those she could, but soon realised it was too big for her alone! Thankfully the Hangklip-Kleinmond Administration agreed to help subsidise sterilisations and so help stem the flow of unwanted, malnourished litters, but only if a proper Animal Welfare Society was formed.
Today, thanks to its dedicated (all ladies!) staff, we have continued Yvonne’s legacy and KAWS is recognised as a highly active and effective animal welfare organisation, covering the areas from Rooielse through to Botrivier.
We have a monthly sterilisation and vaccination day for members of the lower income group, free of charge, for those members of the community who qualify for welfare rates. In the last 8 years we have sterilised 2 000.00 animals!!
Being an NPO: 016-676, we rely heavily on donations and the heart of KAWS is our Charity Shop. We are so grateful to all the community for the donations we receive to sell in our Charity Shop. These funds are used for food, not only for our animals but the lower income pet owners, veterinary bills, (this month alone that was R40 000.00!) and sterilisations.
