We are very pleased to report that the BBBAG has been doing well in their project to produce and sell at cost both fully kitted out baboon-proof wheelie bins as well as baboon-proofing to residents who already have a wheelie bin but need a ‘conversion’.
Slowly, one bin at a time, we are reducing the desire and ability of baboons to gain rewards from our household waste. It is encouraging to watch baboons who actually recognize the bin as baboon-proof and then walk past to inspect the next one.
To date, BBBAG has sold 77 ‘full kits’ and 45 ‘conversion kits’ – mostly to Betty’s Bay households but some residents in Pringle Bay, Hermanus and Gordon’s Bay have also invested in one. The bins are produced in batches: Elsa travels to Somerset West and returns with a load of ‘raw’ bins. These are fitted with galvanized baboon-proofing and are then ready to be sold. The cost of the full kit is R1650, including local delivery.
BBBAG is currently looking for a metalworker to make baboon-proof metal cages. If you know of anyone who can assist in this way, please contact Elsa on 083 283 7362
The Betty’s Bay Conservancy acts as a partner and fiscal sponsor to the program.

Well done to BBBAG for this proactive project and thanks to Elsa for all her driving!
