The BBC took the initiative to organize a “Conservation Corner” at the Harold Porter Gardens indoor market. We invited other local conservation organisations to join us. Rooi Els Conservancy, the Kogelberg Branch of the Botanical Society (BotSoc), Betty’s Bay Baboon Action Group (BBBAG), Kogelberg Biosphere Wildlife Rescue and Training Centre and Coastal Rewilding shared the two tables or had a representative present.
A poster highlighted some of the conservation issues of the Kogelberg Coastal area. These include:
light pollution at night that negatively impacts on neighbours and wildlife,- stripping plots before building instead of just clearing for the footprint of the house,
- speeding on the R44 and the deadly impact this has on our wildlife,
- protecting the African penguin,
- securing waste in baboon-proof bins.
It was not a long weekend, or during school holidays, so Betty’s Bay was not bustling with people and the market was fairly quiet. We sold some mugs, our new tea towels, a BBC ”Plot purchased for the preservation of biodiversity” sign , two BIOSPHERE LIVING members signs, some WILD magazines and took some orders for our new T-shirts.
It was also great to have four Betty’s Bay residents sign up as new BBC members. Welcome!
Thanks to the other organisations that joined us in “the conservation corner”. It was a good collaborative effort and the BBC looks forward to working together in the future.
