Kleinmond Animal Welfare Society Update: September 2025

Over the past few months we have seen so many lost dogs running on the roads in Betty’s Bay. This situation is not only dangerous for the animals but distressing for motorists who have almost run over them.

We are appealing to the community to ensure that your properties are secure for your pets. Not having a fence is not an excuse. Our by-laws clearly state that “no person may keep a dog on premises that are not fenced in such a manner that such dog is at all times confined to the premises”. As an Animal Welfare, KAWS is obliged to report these cases to Law Enforcement and  the dog will then be impounded with us for fourteen days. If the owner is not found within that time it then becomes one of our dogs and will be put up for adoption.

It is understandable if a dog gets out by accident. These things do happen. Reuniting an animal with its owner is quicker when the dog has a collar with a tag. Having your pet microchipped is also an inexpensive option.

KAWS along with Dr Labuschagne has been operating mobile clinics in the Mooiuitsig community over the last two weeks. We have been vaccinating puppies and giving annual vaccinations to adult dogs and cats, including rabies vaccinations. We have also medicated animals for parasite control and have booked in dogs and cats that need to be sterilised.

This week we will deliver kennels to the pet owners, as well as blankets and food which were donated by The Dogbox Project, an annual event held at the Whale Coast Mall. Each kennel has been beautifully painted by members of the public.
